For over 20 years, this Tyrolean village at the head of the Zillertal valley has been home to Snowbombing. But it doesn't just play host to the festival, it embraces it. Performances take over everywhere from mountaintop venues and hotel bars to the cobbled streets themselves (we've even taken over a local butcher's shop). Ski by day, après in the spring sunshine in the afternoon and experience world-class DJs by night. For one week every April, Mayrhofen becomes the best party in the Alps.

Mayrhofen isn't a resort built around a lift pass: it's a genuine Alpine village that's welcomed travellers for well over a century. Wander five minutes in any direction and you're in narrow streets lined with quaint guesthouses, with the Ziller river running straight through the heart of the town. It's the kind of place where you can be arm-in-arm with thousands of people at a mountaintop stage at 4pm, and eating dinner in a 200-year-old Gasthof by 8pm.

Mayrhofen takes food as seriously as it takes snow. Goldkind is a standout restaurant with locals: offering inventive European plates and a wine list worth lingering over. Carnivores will love Restaurant El Toro for steaks done properly, or Gasthof Perauer, a local institution built on dry-aged Tyrolean beef. For the golden-hour drink that turns into three, The HOF BAR is the town’s best-kept secret for out of this world cocktails.
For a proper occasion, La Vita at Hotel Pramstraller does elegant Alpine dining across a dining room, winter garden and lounge bar, while Fine Alpine Dining by Zillertalerhof pairs a five-course tasting menu with a sommelier-led wine list.

Even off the slopes, Mayrhofen gives you reasons to stay an extra day. Ride the Penkenbahn - one of the most advanced cable cars in the world, climbing over 1,100m of panoramic Zillertal views in under ten minutes. Chase spring snow at the Hintertux Glacier, skiable year-round. Or skip the boots and spend an afternoon at one of the many hotel spas instead.

Snow by day, sun terrace by 3pm
Snowbombing lands in early April for a reason: peak spring-skiing season, when the glacier's still fully loaded but the valley turns warm and bright. Mayrhofen's south-facing terraces come alive in the afternoon sun: swap the jacket for sunglasses, grab a beer, watch the village turn gold as the DJs set up for the night. Pack the SPF along with the salopettes.
Regulars call it "the goggle tan" for a reason.
